Baltimore Orioles History: A Chronicle of Superiority and Breakdown June 18 Womens Devonta Freeman Jersey , 2012 | Author: jaxfinnister | Posted in Recreation and Sports
From the top of the standings, to the lowest of the lows, the Baltimore Orioels have been both bottom-dwellers and kings in their storied history.

The Orioles began their stay in Baltimore in 1954. Previous to this, they were the St. Louis Browns (and for a little while previous to that they were the original Milwaukee Brewers).

Although the team lost a hundred games that year, they made a move that would in the end help the club to become one of the greatest clubs in the sport — they signed up Paul Richards as managergeneral manager. Richards helped to instill sound baseball fundamentals in the organization from top to bottom. These fundamentals would soon take root and produce championship caliber teams for years into the future.

But these championships would not come immediately. It required another three seasons for the organization to reach the .500 mark. Soon, however, the team was filled with high-caliber young players. It would only take a small amount of experience for the club to come together.

A fundamental factor of the club coming together was the hiring of Lee MacPhail. MacPhail helped to steady the club’s scouting staff — another prompt that would serve the Orioles well in years to come.

Although Richards was an essential element in getting the team off the ground, he left the Orioles in 1961 before they saw great success. He took a position as general manager for the Colt 45s in Houston.

In 1964, future Orioles star, third baseman Brooks Robinson, had a proficient season. Always a defensive whiz, Robinson showed up strong on the offensive side and won the MVP Authentic Steve Bartkowski Jersey , and the Orioles competed for the coveted American League pennant in a three-way race with the White Sox and the Yankees.

Even though they didn’t win the pennant that year, the club could be said to have finally arrived. They were significant contenders and a club to be reckoned with.

In the winter of 1965 the Orioles traded for all-time great Frank Robinson. That move was the decisive item of the puzzle for the Orioles. Robinson won the MVP award in 1966, and the Orioles won the World Series — sweeping the Los Angeles Dodgers in four consecutive games.

Three years later, in 1969, the Orioles would be back in the World Series (this time playing the New York Mets). Despite the fact they lost this series, it would be the beginning of the three straight years that the team went to the World Series. They would win the series anew in 1970, but then be overthrown by the Oakland A’s in 1971.

In the ’71 year, four Orioles pitchers managed to win twenty game each (Jim Palmer, Mike Cuellar, Dave McNally, and Pat Dobson). This accomplisment had never been done before and has never been repeated since.

Although the Orioles would miss the playoffs the following year, they wouldbe back in postseason the next two years (’73 & ’74).

Even though the squad would be brimming with well-known names to baseball fans high and low Authentic Deion Sanders Jersey , the O’s didn’t manage to appear in the playoffs another time till 1979, a year that garnered the Cy Young Award for pitcher Mike Flanagan. The team also made it back to the World Series that season; be that as it may, they lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

All through the most remarkable years up this point, the Orioles manger was the great Earl Weaver. Weaver, popular for his colorful character and dedication to statistics, was an innovator. After the 1982 year, however, Weaver retired and was replaced by Joe Altobelli. Altobelli and a young kid named Cal Ripken, Jr. helped lead the Orioles to new World Series championship the next season. Ripken also won the MVP in that summer.

The next five seasons or so would be difficult ones for the the club. They would be part of losing records and record-setting losing streaks (0-21 to start the 1988 season).

In 1992, there was an atmosphere of renewal as the organization moved from it’s old habitat in Memorial Stadium on 33rd Street to the brand new Oriole’s Park at Camden Yards. For all that it would take another few years before the Orioles would see the playoffs again in 1996 and 1997.

In 1998, the team’s misfortune returned, and they went from a playoff club to a losing season. Although replete with hope at various times since Authentic Brett Favre Jersey , the Orioles have not seen a winning season since the 1997 season.

Today, the Orioles have a restored sense of optimism and a young organization of promising players. As they scrap to get back .500 baseball, and someday another World Series, Orioles fans far and wide hope the future will be as remarkable as the past.
