It turned into a slop fest.”After its slow start, Detroit rallied with three straight goals and pulled within one twice in the third period.“We didn’t play the first period,” said Anthony Mantha, who scored two goals for the Red Wings. “We didn’t do anything until we got told to wake up between periods. That was pretty much the whole message.”Dubois’ second goal midway through the third stood after a video review and challenge, giving Columbus a two-goal lead.“It was kind of confusing for everybody,” said Boone Jenner, whose goal gave the Blue Jackets a 5-1 lead in the second.Mantha’s second goal with 2:12 left pulled the Red Wings within a goal again and they pulled goaltender Jonathan Bernier to add an extra skater. Seth Jones took advantage, sealing the victory with an empty-net goal less than a minute later.Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 27 shots for the Blue Jackets, who had lost two of three.“We’re up 3-0 after the first period, but Bob made some really big saves,” Tortorella said.Jimmy Howard gave up three goals on 16 shots in the first period and was replaced by Bernier, who finished with 12 saves.Detroit has lost three straight after winning six of seven.“The first period, we got outworked,” Detroit’s Frans Nielsen said. “They skated more than we did. We got outworked, basically. We don’t have the talent in here that we can afford to get outworked. We gotta show up every night for 60 minutes if we want to win in this league.”Columbus’ Cam Atkinson’s goal-scoring streak ended at seven games, tying Geoff Sanderson’s franchise record set in 2002. Joel Eriksson Ek added an empty-net goal as the Wild finished 27-6-8 at Xcel Energy Center, the second-best home record in the league. With rookies Nick Seeler and Carson Soucy, in his NHL debut no less, playing key roles on the blue line, the Wild put together a postseason-caliber performance.”You need different people to step up and do important things, and that’s going to be the case for us,” Dubnyk said. ”That was a good look.”Cam Talbot made 37 saves for the Oilers, who lost their fifth straight game and ensured a sub-80-point finish for the eighth time in the last nine years.”The finish line is non-rewarding.
